Season Preview: Newcastle Eagles

It does seem strange that the Eagles didn’t bring home any silverware last season, especially with the likes of former BBL MVP Trey Moore in the mix who is now a free agent.

But what isn’t strange is the ever-growing loyalty of Darius Defoe who returns in the black and white for yet another campaign.

Another northeast fan favourite returns this season with Charles Smith competing in his eight season for the eagles. Smith is now the all time leading points scorer for the eagles with over 5000 points in a glorious career averaging over 20 points per game.

But there are some new additions for the Newcastle public to cheer with power forward Andrew Thomson joining for the defending champions the Mersey Tigers. He was also named British Basketball Player of the Year in the 2010/11 championship claiming campaign.

So with a mix of old and new from across the BBL can the eagles put on a Fab-u-lous display?

One to watch: Joe Chapman- he only played in 17 games last season but put up enough numbers on the score sheet to impress. In just 17 games he averaged 20 points, four assists and four rebounds per game. Imagine what he could do with more minutes.
