Rocks face Edinburgh in rare derby

There will be a rare local derby in Scotland this weekend as Glasgow Rocks take on Edinburgh Kings in the BBL Cup first round.

There will be a rare local derby in Scotland this weekend as Glasgow Rocks take on Edinburgh Kings in the BBL Cup first round.

The Kings are currently top of the Scottish National League and were invited to compete in the BBL Cup following the demise of Essex Pirates, just a fortnight before the start of the season.

It gives Scottish basketball fans a rare chance to see the two best sides in the country hit it off on the court, and Rocks coach Sterling Davis is looking forward to the event.

He said: “Edinburgh will be a well-disciplined team. I’m not too sure about personnel in the team – but they are very good at running a system. They have an impressive and very successful record in the National League and are definitely a team that needs to be respected.”

The Kings have won all of their first five league games this term as they look to secure a ninth championship in 10 years.

Kings Head Coach Doug Reilly said: “We are delighted to have been given this opportunity to play in the BBL Cup. The players and coaching staff are eagerly looking forward to pitting ourselves against the Glasgow Rocks, in a game that will be an excellent test of our abilities.”

The two sides previously met in 2006 during the pool stages of the BBL Trophy – with the Rocks winning 103-59.
