Eagles starlet praises Hoops 4 Health scheme

Newcastle teenager Ross Wilson has revealed that his inspiration to become a professional basketball player came through the Hoops 4 Health programme delivered by clubs in the BBL.

Hoops 4 Health aims to educate young people on a number of issues including healthy eating, healthy living and no smoking, and it is delivered league wide by all clubs.

It was on a visit some eight years ago by the Eagles to Wilson’s school at Gosforth Central that inspired him to pursue his basketball dream, and he made an early name for himself by landing a crucial three-pointer in last weekend’s victory over Sheffield.

Wilson told the Newcastle Chronicle: “When I first joined the senior squad I told Fab that I remembered meeting him when I was 10 years old at Gosforth Central.

“I’m not sure what he made of that, he didn’t really say much about it! I was in Year Five or Six and I remember a group of the guys coming in and giving the speeches that I give to kids now.

“It was one of the big things that motivated me to real give basketball a go.

“I had just got involved with the Eagles back then but athletics had been my thing before then – it was a big part of helping me along the way because Fab was brilliant at inspiring all of us.

“I really love it when we visit schools now for the Hoops for Health programme because I know what an effect it can have on you. I love getting involved in that because it brings you closer to the fans as well.”
