Flournoy happy with weekend’s work

It was a perfect weekend for Fab Flournoy as Newcastle progressed to the BBL Cup final and extended their lead at the top of the championship.

The Eagles look like ominous candidates for at least a double this season as their early season march shows no signs of stopping.

They saw off Leicester in Friday’s BBL Cup semi-final second leg, winning 71-63 to book their place at the NIA in Birmingham for the final on January 15th, where they will play Worcester or Plymouth.

And they followed up that win with a hard-fought 89-85 triumph over Glasgow Rocks on Sunday.

Flournoy said: “We really played hard against Leicester and that showed a little in our offensive execution which was patchy and our foul shooting which was horrible! But defence is key in big games like that and that got us through.

“Again we didn’t put four quarters together against the Rocks. Our energy was good early and our zone caused them trouble in the first half. That said in the second half they made virtually every hustle play going and their shooters made some shots. We lost our poise for a time but regained it and closed the game out efficiently. Joe [Chapman] made some big plays for us at the end to close the game.”

Newcastle are also in the last four of the BBL Trophy, as they look to bounce back from a trophyless campaign last term.
