Flournoy earns coach of the month award

Newcastle Eagles’ player coach Fab Flournoy has been awarded the accolade of Molten BBL Coach Of The Month For January after a sensational start to the new calendar year.

Newcastle Eagles’ player coach Fab Flournoy has been awarded the accolade of Molten BBL Coach Of The Month For January after a sensational start to the new calendar year.

The north-east club has been in superb form of late and are unbeaten during 2012 after winning all six games during the period.

This has ensured they have not only maintained their status as BBL Championship frontrunners but also meant they scooped the first piece of silverware this season by romping to victory against UCP Marjon Plymouth Raiders at the BBL Cup Final.

Flournoy showed why he is renowned as an inspirational leader by throwing away his crutches which he had been utilising due to a painful foot injury in the lead up to the game so he could lead by example both on and off the court.

Along with assistant coach Dave Forrester, the duo have got the team playing their trademark tenacious defence and with both Charles Smith and Joe Chapman in blistering shooting form and with the energetic Paul Gause pulling the strings to great effect, the Eagles have been dominant.

They won their six games by a combined margin of 95 points with only two of their opponents even managing to get within single digits of the league leaders.

Flournoy winning the award completes a Newcastle Eagles double with Charles Smith being crowned Molten BBL Player Of The Month For January.

However the pair won’t have time to celebrate ahead of what is a crunch weekend for the Eagles who face One Health Sharks Sheffield in the first leg of the BBL Trophy semi-finals on Friday. They then hit the road again to face fellow title challengers Worcester Wolves on Saturday and will no doubt be eager to avenge their only league loss of the season so far.
