Davis: It’s time to pick up the pace

Glasgow Rocks coach Sterling Davis is hopeful that his team can ‘pick up the pace at the right time’ following the excellent win over Newcastle Eagles at the weekend.

Glasgow Rocks coach Sterling Davis is hopeful that his team can ‘pick up the pace at the right time’ following the excellent win over Newcastle Eagles at the weekend.

In front of their home fans, Glasgow ended a run of four successive BBL defeats with an 85-77 victory on Sunday, handing Newcastle only their third defeat of the entire campaign in the process.

It was a famous night for Davis’ team and the Rocks coach was delighted with his players, especially considering it was the first time he has had a full strength team to choose from for quite some time.

Speaking exclusively to bblfans.com, he said: “The guys really played well. They are always up for a game against Newcastle and vice versa. It was pretty good to have a full team out there and that gave us even more motivation.”

“It was almost overwhelming at times to have so many players compared to what we have been used to this year. It was good to have everybody playing on the same court again.”

The American is also hopeful that this victory can be the start of a positive run for his team as they look to finish what has been a frustrating campaign on a high note.

“It [the win over Newcastle] has been a big morale boost for the guys. As a group it gives us a level of playing to stay at.”

“It was a good game for us and hopefully we can pick up the pace at the right time at the end of the season for the play-offs.”

Despite defeating Newcastle on the night, Davis is still convinced that the Eagles are the front runners for success this year, saying: “Newcastle are definitely still the team to beat. They have proven themselves time and time again.”

“They deserve a lot of credit for what they have done up to this point and I respect them for that.”

Sunday night definitely belonged to Glasgow though and speaking about the remainder of the campaign, Davis believes that his team are more than capable of going on a good run.

“I’m taking it one game at a time, but I think do I think we have the tools to win basketball games? Yes. Whatever game it is, I think we have the potential to be a pretty good team.”

“It comes down to two things. Number one – us staying healthy. Number two – us playing to our potential. If these two things come into play, we should be OK and should be able to go on a good run.”

Glasgow Rocks are next in action against the Sheffield Sharks on the 13th April.
