Lasker: It really doesn’t matter where we finish

Guildford Heat’s Drew Lasker has revealed that he isn’t too concerned about where his team end up in the BBL table this year, saying that wherever it is, they have a tough challenge to come in the play-offs.

Heat are assured of a play-off spot and could finish as high as 6th if they win their two games this weekend and other results go for them, but Lasker isn’t dwelling on this.

Speaking exclusively to bblfans.com, he said: “Whether we finish 6th or 8th we are going to have a tough match up and our main concern is finishing this weekend by playing some good basketball.”

“This season we have been up and down and very inconsistent. We just want to make sure we are playing the best ball we can play going into the play-offs.”

“We kind of hurt ourselves at the weekend against Durham in terms of pushing for that 6th spot. At this point it really doesn’t matter where we finish.”

Lasker is certainly after an improvement from the last match where Guildford missed an opportunity to climb the table when they lost 96-85 to the Durham Wildcats.

In reference to this defeat, he said: “It was very disappointing because obviously we had an opportunity to jump up to 6th tied with Sheffield. So it was a big game with regards to the standings and finishing on a strong note.”

“It was obviously one of those trap games because it was a long way for us to travel and they are in a point where they don’t have anything to lose, so they were playing free.”

“They were just the better team on the day. We don’t have any excuses. We came out flat, we weren’t ready for play and we paid for it.”

As for this weekend, Guildford are set to take on the Leicester Riders – who sit 4th in the table at the moment – on Saturday and the newly crowned BBL Champions Newcastle Eagles on Sunday.

These are challenges that Lasker is relishing though as his team look to finish the regular season on a positive note heading into the play-offs.

“I would rather we played the top teams to get us ready for that play-off push. We are definitely looking forward to bouncing back. That is one thing we have done well this year. We are looking forward to the games.”
