Thomson still hungry for more medals

Newcastle’s Andrew Thomson still wants to win more silverware, despite winning eight of the last nine BBL prizes.

Newcastle’s Andrew Thomson still wants to win more silverware, despite winning eight of the last nine BBL prizes.

Thomson, 28, followed up last season’s league, trophy and play-offs treble with the Mersey Tigers by being part of the all conquering Newcastle Eagles team which completed their clean sweep of trophies by beating Leicester in Saturday’s play-off final.

The Manchester-born forward also won the play-offs at the end of the 2009/10 season with the then Everton Tigers, meaning that last January’s BBL Cup final defeat against Sheffield, with the Tigers, is the only blip in an incredible two years for the 6’10” star.

When asked about where he’s going to keep all his medals, the former Manchester Magic man, laughed: “I’ve not done too bad! I’ve won the play-offs three years in a row now, so I’m over the moon about that.

“I’m just happy to have done it with this set of lads, they are a great set of guys. I’m fortunate to be in this situation.”

After leaving the Tigers last summer, Thomson had been expected to make a move to Spain, where he has previously played for Gijon and Almeria, but his decision to move to the north east has proved to be an inspired one, and he wants to stay for me.

He added: “I’m looking to stay at Newcastle. I’ve still got to talk about things and sit down with the club, but I want to defend my titles again.”
